For the second year in a row, The Addams Family was the musical performed most often in high school productions, the Educational Theatre Association says.
The association's list of the most popular high school productions in 2019-20 put Mamma Mia! in second place. Making the top 10 for the first time was Matilda, based on the Roald Dahl children's book. It tied for 7th on the list.
High school theatrical productions, like most everything connected to schools, was significantly affected by the coronavirus.
Out of 3,297 schools that took part in the association's survey, 85% reported canceling performances, and 28% said they canceled five or more performances.
The lost revenue from performances canceled in the spring means that in many cases, schools will have to cut back their theater budgets in 2020-21, the association says.
