A student armed with a knife at a Reno, Nev., high school was shot and critically wounded by a school district police officer Wednesday.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that that the wounded student is Logan Clark, 14.
Reno Police Chief Jason Soto says the incident at Hug High School in the Washoe County School District began at 11:25 a.m. with an altercation between two students. One student drew a knife and tried to attack others.
A school police officer told the student to drop the knife, and when the student didn't cooperate, the officer shot him. After the shooting, the officer provided medical attention.
The school was locked down immediately following the shooting, and students and staff were ordered to remain in their classrooms as police blocked all access to the campus.
At about noon, the district sent an email to parents across the district. The message didn’t mention a police shooting or student injury, just that Hug was locked down following “an incident on campus."
Students were released a couple of hours later, after 2 p.m.
