A student has shot himself at an Ohio middle school Tuesday morning; police say the wound was self-inflicted.
The Massillon Independent reports that the student, whose age has not been disclosed, shot himself in a boy’s restroom at Jackson Memorial Middle School in Massillon at about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, about 10 minutes before classes were scheduled to begin.
The student's condition has not been disclosed, and authorities have not indicated what might have led to the shooting. No other students at the school were injured in the incident.
Jackson Middle School has about 1,400 students in grades six to eight.
The incident occurred on the first day of school back from a holiday break, and after police from multiple agencies investigated threats made on social media over the weekend that were deemed not credible. There was a heightened police presence at several area school buildings Tuesday morning.
News 5 Cleveland reports that investigators found "distractionary-type" devices in the backpack of the boy who shot himself. Authorities say the devices were not explosives and they didn't find any devices that "would have done harm to others."
Students at the middle school were placed in lockdown and released to their parents Tuesday afternoon.
Students at Jackson High School have been evacuated and all other buildings in the Jackson Local District are closed.
