A 19-year-old former student at Dixon High School in Dixon, Ill., is in custody with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound in the shoulder after being shot by a school resource officer.
SaukValley.com reports that the man came to the school Wednesday morning with a gun and shot at officer Mark Dallas, who returned fire, Sheriff John Simonton says.
Multiple sources identified the alleged shooter as Matt Milby, who was a senior at Dixon High until he was expelled recently.
The shooting occurred in the gym, where seniors were gathered for graduation practice.
WIFR-TV reports the former student fired several shots near school's west gym. The school resource officer confronted the shooter, who ran out of the school.
The officer gave chase, and the suspect fired several shots. The resource officer returned fire and wounded the suspect. He was arrested near the school.
The officer was not injured, nor was anyone else, officials say.
Dixon is about 100 miles west of Chicago.
