A 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death Wednesday morning by a fellow student during a fight in a classroom at a Michigan high school.
The Detroit Free Press reports that the suspect, a 17-year-old girl, was in custody.
The identities of the girls have not been disclosed.
The attacked occurred at about 8:30 a.m. at Fitzgerald High School in Warren, Mich.
Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer says a teacher and 20 to 30 students were in the classroom when the victim was stabbed twice with a kitchen knife. A school resource officer performed CPR before the victim was taken to an area hospital.
A motive has not been determined, but police say the girls may have had a relationship with the same boy.
WXYZ-TV reports that the two girls had known each other and had been friends, and were both straight-A students.
According to the victim’s family, she was a member of the cross country team, robotics club, color guard, marching band and National Honor Guard Society, student council and generation of promise.
An announcement on the school's website from Fitzgerald District Superintendent Laurie Fournier says that psychologists and counselors will be available for staff and students at the school.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to the student’s family and we offer our deepest sympathy," Fournier said in the statement.
