A 17-year-old student at a Montgomery County, Md., high school has been charged in the shooting of a classmate.
Steven Alston Jr., who attends Colonel Zadok Magruder High School in Rockville, Md., allegedly shot a 15-year-old student Friday in a school bathroom.
The shooting victim was reported in critical condition Monday, The Washington Post reports.
Alston told authorities he bought the components online for the gun he used, and a friend helped him assemble the weapon, a prosecutor said in court Monday.
Alston has been charged as an adult with attempted second-degree murder, felony assault and weapons offenses.
Authorities have said the shooting grew out a dispute between two students. Authorities said the two had made a “predetermined” decision to settle the matter in a boys’ bathroom.
Students who witnessed the shooting didn’t alert school officials or call 911. Investigators believe they instead took to social media to tweet that someone had been shot and provided information about the suspect and victim.
The injured student was found during a routine check of the bathroom by a security guard at about 12:53 p.m.
