A 12-year-old student at Tanglewood Middle School in Greenville, S.C., has been shot to death; another student, also 12, is in custody.
The Greenville News reports that the shooting took place Thursday afternoon. The suspect was taken into custody after being apprehended near the school.
Authorities say the suspect has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm on school property and unlawful possession of a weapon by a person under the age of 18.
Police had not determined a motive for the shooting or how the shooter was able to get possession of a firearm.
The identities of the victim and the suspect had not been disclosed.
The school's resource officer called for backup Thursday after hearing shots fired, according to the Sheriff's Office.
"We soon learned that the gunfire was from a 12-year-old student who shot another 12-year-old student inside the 700 wing of the school," a Greenville County Sheriff's Office's statement said. "Following the shooting we learned the shooter ran from the school, and a search was initiated. Just before 1:30 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office learned the possible suspect was at a residence, located in the 3000 block of Easley Bridge Road, and when deputies arrived they located him hiding under a deck. The suspect was taken into custody and a handgun was recovered.
