A Purdue University student has been killed inside a residence hall on the West Lafayette, Ind., campus.

The Indianapolis Star reports that the victim’s roommate is a suspect and has been taken into custody.

The student killed has been identified as Varun Manish Chheda, 20, of Indianapolis. He was a senior studying data science and was living in McCutcheon Hall.

The suspect was identified as Ji Min Sha, 22, an international student from Korea studying cyber security.

Preliminary autopsy findings indicate Chheda's death was caused by multiple sharp-force traumatic injuries, according to the Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office.

“I believe this was unprovoked and senseless," said Purdue Police Chief Lesley Wiete.

Sha was taken into custody in a matter of minutes after he called police from his first-floor room to report what happened

McCutcheon Hall is home to 730 residents and opened in 1963.
