The man who fatally shot 17 people and wounded 17 others in 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer formally imposed the sentence on Nikolas Cruz after a jury rejected the death penalty in the case, reports The Associated Press

Cruz, shackled and in a red jail jumpsuit, showed no emotion as the judge spoke.

Cruz, 24, a former Marjory Stoneman Douglas student, pleaded guilty last year to the massacre. He stalked a three-story classroom building at the school for seven minutes on Feb. 14, 2018, firing 140 shots with a semi-automatic rifle.

He will be assigned to a maximum-security facility.
