A faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been killed in a shooting in a laboratory building on campus.
The Raleigh News & Observer reports that police have arrested a suspect in the shooting, which occurred in the Caudill Laboratories in the central part of the university campus.
The identities of the shooting victim and the alleged shooter have not been disclosed. Police have not released details about the circumstances that led to the shooting. No other injuries were reported in the attack.
Classes at the university were canceled Monday afternoon through Tuesday. Caudill Laboratories will remain closed as evidence is collected and processed, University Police Chief Brian James said.
“This loss is devastating, and the shooting damages the trust and safety that we so often take for granted in our campus community,” Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said at a news conference. “We will work to rebuild that sense of trust and safety within our community, and our hearts are with the family of our fellow faculty member, those who are personally connected to the victim and those traumatized by this senseless act of violence.”
A 911 call reporting shots fired inside Caudill Labs was received at 1:02 p.m. When police arrived at the labs, they found the faculty member who had been shot, James said.
The suspect was taken into custody around 2:38 p.m. off campus, the university said.
