A 6-year-old boy finishing kindergarten and his mother were killed when they were struck by a mini-bus while walking to his school in Mamaroneck, New York.
The Journal News reports that the boy, a student at the Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School, was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother, 43, was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
The crash occurred at about 8:30 a.m. about half a block from the school. Police say the bus was traveling eastbound from New Street, turning left. Several parents and children were crossing the street within a crosswalk with a walk sign, police said. That's when the mother and son were struck.
Police said there are no charges pending for the bus driver, 68.
"The driver of the school bus is cooperating with investigators, and it appears at this time that this incident was a tragic accident," a police statement said.
Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the boy or his mother, or the driver of the vehicle that struck them.
