Season is cancelled for undefeated high school football team in New York because of inappropriate sexual conduct
Three school districts in New York state have canceled the remainder of their schools' combined football team's season after allegations of "inappropriate conduct of a sexual nature toward a student" on a school bus.
The Albany Times Union reports that superintendents from the Warrensburg, Lake George and Bolton announced the decision in a message to parents on Saturday. The districts combine their students to form one high school team, which was 8-0 this season and ranked No. 1 in the Class D state poll.
A statement to parents co-signed by Warrensburg Central Superintendent Amy Langworthy, Lake George Central Superintendent John Luthringer and Bolton Central Superintendent Chad Shippee said the cancellation was necessary to "allow law enforcement to continue its criminal investigation."
The districts learned of the incident, which allegedly involved members of the varsity football team, on Wednesday evening. The Warren County Sheriff's Office was notified and began its investigation on Thursday, according to the superintendents.
The superintendents did not elaborate on what happened, or how many student-athletes were allegedly involved. They did say that "this type of alleged misconduct among students or groups of students is strictly prohibited on school property, in school buildings, on school buses, and at all school-sponsored events, whether on or off campus."
"The districts take all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously," the superintendents added. "Due to the alleged participation of a number of student-athletes involved in the incident, both directly and indirectly, there will be disciplinary action taken against any students according to each district's code of conduct and athletic code of conduct."
