A kindergarten student was killed by a school bus in the parking lot of a school in Sussex, Wisconsin.

Fox 6 Milwaukee reports that the bus fatally struck 5-year-old Finn Katona outside Silver Spring Intermediate School on Thursday morning, Jan. 2 – the first day back to class from the holiday break.

Investigators said the boy was at the school to transfer buses; students get off a bus at Silver Spring Intermediate School, then take a shuttle to Willow Springs Learning Center

The sheriff’s department said the bus driver is fully cooperating with the investigation.

In the wake of the accident, the Hamilton School District announced it is changing its school bus policy. All 4K students now will be bused directly to Willow Springs Learning Center instead of transfering buses at Silver Spring Intermediate.

"Beginning on Monday, January 6th, all 4K students will be taken directly to Willow Springs Learning Center," the district said in a letter to parents....The difference moving forward is that morning buses will now go directly to Willow Springs Learning Center to drop off the youngest students first and then continue on to Silver Spring Intermediate School and individual elementary schools."
