A police officer at Wayne State University in Detroit has died after being shot in the head by a man he had stopped.
The Detroit News reports that 29-year-old officer Collin Rose died Wednesday, a day after he was shot during an off-campus confrontation. is on life support at Detroit Receiving Hospital after undergoing surgery for a head wound.
Rose stopped the suspect, who was on foot, Tuesday night, a few blocks off the Wayne State campus, authorities say.
“He stopped, stated he was going to investigate a subject," Wayne State Police Chief Tony Holt says. "The back-up was en route. When the back-up got there, he found the officer on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head.”
A suspect, identified as Deangelo Davis, 31, is in custody, and has been charged charged with first-degree murder, murder of a police officer, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and three felony firearm charges. Authorities say Davis has a history of confrontation with police.
Officers haven’t determined why Rose stopped Davis, who was riding a bicycle at the time, officials say. It was not clear what led to the stop but police have said Rose did not appear to be targeted. The area of the shooting had sustained a recent rash of car break-ins.
The university says Rose has been on the police force for five years and is engaged to be married.
The incident is the first shooting of a Wayne State officer in 36 years.
