A 17-year-old student in the Katy (Texas) Independent School District student is facing charges after allegedly shooting a pig on district property.
KPRC-TV reports that Jacob Samuel Mullins has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon. Bond was set at $10,000.
Authorities say Mullins fatally shot a pig at the district's agricultural sciences facility before bringing the animal to a processing facility.
"A high school student who was attempting to move a livestock project to a processing facility decided to terminate the animal on site prior to transporting it," the district said in a letter to parents. "The student used a firearm to conduct this activity."
A teacher heard the gunshot from a nearby barn and notified Katy school district police.
Mullins did not threaten anyone or any other animals, the letter says.
He was removed from the district's Future Farmers of America program as a result of the incident, and further disciplinary action is pending.
The letter to parents says, "We ask that you use this incident as a teachable moment with your student to help confirm with them the important role they play in keeping our schools and facilities safe."
