Authorities say a high school freshman has been stabbed multiple times in a stairwell of a high school in suburban Philadelphia.
WPVI-TV reports that the incident occurred Monday morning at Upper Darby High School in Drexel Hill, Pa.
The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and the wounds are not considered life-threatening.
His identity was not disclosed.
Police have a person of interest, also a freshman, in custody for questioning and expect charges shortly. Investigators believe the skirmish resulted from a quarrel over a girl. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says one freshman boy was waiting for the victim as he entered a stairwell.
"As he goes into the stairwell, apparently he is assaulted by another student," Chitwood says. "He's stabbed at least one time in the back, pretty significant stab wound, and then he's got a cut on the back of his neck and a cut on the back of his head,"
Officers responded to the scene shortly before noon as final exams were wrapping up and students were going home early.
Surveillance cameras in that area of the school enabled police to quickly identify a suspect.
Police have not yet found the weapon, believed to be a knife.
