FEMA approves portable classrooms for flood-ravaged West Virginia school system
Temporary classrooms at two Kanawha County campuses will provide space for students from a high school and elementary school destroyed in June flooding.
The district says it will place portable classrooms at Elkview Middle as a temporary home for Herbert Hoover High School and at Bridge Elementary to accommodate students who attended Clendenin Elementary School.
The district would like FEMA to cover 75 percent or more of the cost of installing the portables and of building new schools for the displaced students.
While awaiting the portables, the district is using split schedules at Elkview. Hoover students attend classes in the afternoon, and middle-schoolers attend in the morning. Clendenin and Bridge students are using the Bridge building at the same time.
Flooding in June caused heavy damage to the Hoover and Clendenin buildings, and district officials determined that each school would have to be rebuilt.
