As Tropical Storm Harvey continues to pour its devastating rains on south Texas, many Houston area school districts have canceled classes for the entire coming week.
Houston Independent School District (HISD) officials "have been closely monitoring the forecast and have determined that the storms and heavy rains that affected parts of the city make conditions too dangerous" to resume school this week, the district announced on its web site. "Many in our HISD family will be dealing with the task of cleaning up the damage Harvey left behind."
Schools and offices in the Houston district will be closed from Monday, Aug. 28 through Friday, Sept. 1, and on Monday, Sept. 4, which is Labor Day.
Schools are expected to reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Houston is the largest district in Texas. Monday was supposed to be the first day of classes for Houston and many other districts.
Other districts that have closed for the entire week, according to The Houston Chronicle:
Cypress-Fairbanks, Fort Bend, Katy, Aldine, Clear Creek, Alvin, Channelview, Humble, Klein, Pearland, Spring, Spring Branch, Stafford and Waller.
