A man trying to enter Walnut Park Elementary School in Gadsden, Ala., was shot to death Thursday by police.
The Associated Press reports that Gadsden City school superintendent Tony Reddick said that a “potential intruder” went to several doors trying to get into the school, where 34 students were attending a summer literacy program.
All the exterior doors were locked, and the principal alerted the school's resource officer about the situation.
The resource officer confronted a person who tried to break into a police car near the school, authorities said.
The person, identified as 32-year-old Robert Tyler White of Bunnlevel, N.C., was shot to death after resisting and trying to take the resource officer’s gun.
The resource officer suffered minor injuries; no students were hurt, and most were not aware of the incident as it was occurring, Reddick said.
