Sheriff's deputy teaching class in Indiana accidentally shoots student

The deputy was talking to a vocational law enforcement class at South Vermillion County High School in Clinton, Ind., when his gun accidentally discharged; the student sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

A student at South Vermillion County High School in Clinton, Ind., has been accidentally shot by a sheriff's deputy. 

Indiana State Police said the shooting occurred at around 9:30 a.m. Thursday as Deputy Tim DisPennett was speaking to a vocational law enforcement class, reports Vermillion County First.

Authorities say DisPennett accidentally discharged his gun and wounded a high school senior.

The student was taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries

Dave Chapman, superintendent of the South Vermillion (Ind.) district, said the student was grazed by the bullet. 

DisPennett, a 19-year veteran of the department, was placed on administrative leave.

South Vermillion County High School is about 15 miles north of Terre Haute.
