Two children walking to school in Riverdale Park, Maryland, have been struck and killed by a vehicle.
The Washington Post reports that the crash occurred Monday morning near Riverdale Elementary School in the Prince George’s County district.
Riverdale Park police said officers responded at about 8 a.m. for a “collision involving two children walking to school."
Deputy Chief Alan Doubleday of the county fire department said an emergency crew rushed the two children to a hospital in “very critical” condition. Doubleday said he did not know their precise ages but said they were about 8 years old.
The driver of the vehicle that struck them remained on the scene after the crash, Doubleday said.
In a note to the school community, Assistant Principal Melissa Moore said the crash had occurred in front of the school during morning arrival time, but she offered no additional details.
Moore did not indicate if the victims were students at the school.
