An elementary school in Andover, Kan., will be closed for the rest of the school year after it sustained significant damage from a tornado.

The tornado struck Prairie Creek Elementary School on Friday night, and after surveying the damage, Andover district leaders decided that classes could not resume there, reports the Butler County Times-Gazette.

“Prairie Creek Elementary School suffered significant damage in the tornado,” the district said. “We walked through each room of the school this morning to assess damage. Some rooms were untouched, while others were heavily damaged."

Prairie Creek was the only school in Andover damaged in the tornado.

The district says it expects classes for Prairie Creek students will resume May 9, but it has not determined where students will be housed.

For the rest of the district's schools, classes will resume Tuesday.
