26 charter schools get final approval in North Carolina

Number of charters in state will rise to 153 in 2014-15

The North Carolina State Board of Education has given final approval for 26 new charter schools to open this fall. The Raleigh News & Observer says the approved schools include 11 in the Charlotte area and six in the Raleigh-Durham area. The number of charter schools in North Carolina has expanded sharply since legislators eliminated the 100-school cap in 2011. There now are 127 schools, and the latest approvals will raise the number to 153 schools.
