Broward County (Fla.) district paid $1 million toward project that had been cancelled

The Broward County (Fla.) School District paid more than $1 million toward a construction project that had already been terminated by Superintendent Robert Runcie, according to a new audit report. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says the $4.8 million project to construct maintenance offices in Pembroke Pines was scrapped last January. According to the 225-page audit, the district's office of facilities and construction signed off on two payments to the project builder, Royal Concrete Concepts of Jupiter, after the district terminated the project. Many items were paid for, but never found on site by auditors, including $570,000 worth of wall panels, $130,000 of concrete and $66,000 worth of doors. The district is seeking a settlement with the builder.
