Slippery floors force district to cancel classes

High humidity makes floors too treacherous in Amherst, Mass., schools

Slippery floors forced a Massachusetts school district to call off classes today. The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that maintenance crews have been drying out the school buildings in the Amherst-Pelham Regional District with fans and chillers and opening up doors and windows so that students will be able to return to class Friday. Slick floors caused by high humidity forced schools to close.  Up to 20 minor falls were reported in the district’s six buildings over the course of the school day Wednesday. The slippery surfaces were caused by condensation that developed when hot, humid hit cooler ground-level floors. School buildings have encountered similar conditions during the summer when classes are not in session, officials say, but not during the school year
