With freed-up state money, Philadelphia district can rehire 400 laid-off workers

Governor has released $45 million in funding that was being withheld.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett's release of $45 million in state funding will enable the Philadelphia School District to rehire 400 teachers, counselors, assistant principals, secretaries, and others. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the rehiring of the laid off workers will begin immediately. The money also will let the district significantly reduce the number of students in split-grade classrooms, and extend music education and athletics.
