Anne Arundel County (Md.) district wants to build 40 cellphone towers

Project would bring in $5 million for the district, but some parents have raised safety concerns.

The Anne Arundel County (Md.) school system hopes to erect at least 40 cellphone towers for payments totaling $5 million through 2021. But, The Baltimore Sun reports, parents who oppose the construction say the towers pose a health hazard because of radio waves and the possibility of collapse or fires. The County Council is considering whether to enact restrictions on cell towers at schools--requiring at least a football field's distance between the tower and any other structures on school property.
