Two school districts will share the most coveted annual award for urban school districts in the country, U.S. News and World Reports reported. Gwinnett County Public Schools in the Atlanta area and Orange County Public Schools in Florida were announced this week as the co-winners of The Broad Prize for Urban Education, which comes with $1 million in scholarships.
The award is given to the district that has demonstrated the strongest student performance while closing achievement gaps among the district’s minority and low-income student population. This is the first time two districts have won the prize.
Gwinnett County is the 13th largest district, with 163,062 students in the 2012-2013 school year, and Orange County is the 10th largest, with 183,021, according to the most recent AS&U 100 list.
