Teachers in Scranton (Pa.) district go on strike over pay, health care

Nov. 4, 2021
The walkout by 800 teachers and paraprofessionals affects about 10,000 students.

Nearly 800 teachers and paraprofessionals in the Scranton (Pa.) school district have gone on strike over what they say are unfair working conditions.

The walkout has interrupted classes for about 10,000 students, reports WYOU Channel 22 News

The teachers say they have been without a contract or pay raise since 2017, reports WNEP-TV Channel 16 News.

Proposals from the two sides remain millions of dollars apart, The Scranton Times-Tribune reports. The district is demanding that the union agree to a different health care plan to help pay for raises. The union refuses to give up retroactive pay; some teachers are owed more than $80,000.

The district's financial recovery plan requires that any raises come from savings within the contract.

During the strike, employees and their families are without district medical coverage because the district canceled the  insurance coverage of employees who walked out. District lawyers said the cancellation was legal; teachers union officials characterized it as "mean."
