Teachers strike keeps Sacramento (Calif.) district schools closed
Schools in the Sacramento (Calif.) district remain closed because of a teachers' strike.
Teachers walked off the job last week in an effort to secure better pay for instructional aides, nutrition service workers and bus drivers, reports KTXL News. The job action has canceled classes for about 40,000 students.
Negotiators with the Sacramento City Teachers Organization met with the district Sunday for the first time since the strike began Wednesday. The district also met with leaders from SEIU Local 1021, which represents non-teaching support staff.
The district says its latest offer to teachers includes a 2% salary increase, a boost in the bonus for this school year from 2% to 3%, and a $3,000 allowance for employees who move their insurance coverage from Health Net to Kaiser Permanente.
For SEIU Local 1021, the district said its latest proposal includes a 2% salary increase and various stipends through the end of the school year.
Union leaders said a 2% raise isn’t enough, especially because workers have gone years without one. They said they want improved safety conditions and cost of living increases.
