June 6, 2022
The San Diego French American School, which has a long-term lease on the property, is planning to expand into the Montessori space.

The Montessori School of La Jolla in La Jolla, Calif., will close this week after it lost its lease.

The school had been leasing space from the adjacent San Diego French American School, the French American school plans to expand into the Montessori space, reports the La Jolla Light

San Diego French American signed a 60-year master lease in 2018 with the San Diego school district. The Montessori School of La Jolla was permitted to remain on the property. The lease expired in 2021, according to the French American School, and was extended for one additional year.

Montessori School of La Jolla was established in 1975.

The school uses portable classrooms built into the ground to look permanent. When the decision was made not to renew the lease, Montessori School management considered moving the buildings to another site. No viable site was found, so rather than demolish the school, the French American school decided to buy the buildings and all the equipment.

San Diego French American School will begin construction this summer on new art and media labs.
