Miami college president furious with Florida lawmakers

Miami Dade College President Eduardo Padrón is angry at Florida lawmakers for considering a bill that would allow a Miami-Dade voter referendum on a half-penny sales tax that would benefit the college.

Polls show that the measure would have a strong likelihood of passing, bringing much-needed funds to the decaying school. However, Padrón believes that a group of conservative Republicans are trying to kill the bill and organize broad opposition against the measure. 

The bill would raise approximately $1 billion for Miami-Dade College, most of which would go to construction and renovations. Other monies would be used to buttress the school’s online offerings and for student financial aid, The Miami Herald reported.
