32 more charters schools plan to open in Michigan

Thirty-two new charter schools plan to open this later this year in Michigan, including three cyber academies as well as "blended-learning" schools in Novi and Beverly Hills, where charters are making their first appearance. The Detroit News reports that many of the new schools will be in urban areas where charter schools already are prominent, such as Detroit, Grand Rapids and Flint. Suburban communities such as Waterford, Warren, Pontiac, Hazel Park and Oxford also are getting some new schools, said officials with the Michigan Association of Public School Academies. Of the new schools, 27 are chartered by state universities, three by local school districts, one by an intermediate school district and one by a community college. Michigan has 276 charter schools serving about 131,000 students.
